Wow , this all sounds cool, now the question is how many out of 500 million people who are already on facebook would be comfortable to switch to a software and fix their own Pods to connect to group of people they know.

This is something which made lots of news and attracted the Digital news industry every now and then. The diaspora team did it in a way that if they would have launched there product well in time then certainly they would have gained a lot of traction. The idea of decentralized web as Diaspora claims sounds interesting however it still seems not scalable in terms of an organisational structure.

We already have something called Elgg which is an open source one click install social network which we can say is decentralized as well to a certain extent, every niche can operate their own social hub using elgg and with the help of little knowledge one can easily customize it too. then came Appleseed project which also claimed the same. In the series the last entrant was Diaspora but they made the news which the other two failed.

What Diaspora is ?

In there own words

CHOICE – “Diaspora lets you sort your connections into groups called aspects. Unique to Diaspora, aspects ensure that your photos, stories and jokes are shared only with the people you intend.”

OWNERSHIP – “You own your pictures, and you shouldn’t have to give that up just to share them. You maintain ownership of everything you share on Diaspora, giving you full control over how it’s distributed.”

SIMPLICITY – “Diaspora makes sharing clean and easy – and this goes for privacy too. Inherently private, Diaspora doesn’t make you wade through pages of settings and options just to keep your profile secure.”

Wow , this all sounds cool, now the question is how many out of 500 million people who are already on facebook would be comfortable to switch to a software and fix their own Pods to connect to group of people they know.

Well for me the idea is great but the application is unreal. And also it fails to serve the purpose of connecting the whole world and making it a more social.

What is Project “I Want Facebook Alternate”, this project is an outcome of research of months that have been put into to find the pain areas that users go through while surfing the social web. Right now the social web is growing like wild fire however the problem is that its also growing the risk of data theft along with the increased spamming. Every now or then we get hell lot of fren requests or wall posts that are merely phishing attempts. There is a whole gang that works in this domain and call them selves Ninjas. Well honestly there is no way to fight these ninjas because they are anonymous and they are huge in numbers.

The Facebook alternate project is all about your society which includes you family , your friends, your colleagues and your so called known references. Its a free a network and when we say free its completely Ads free too. Now the question pops up how can it be free and if it is then how would we manage to run the show, well thats simple we are trying to work out economics the other way, rather than working on the traditional user info selling to Advertisers.

What a question, “Who wants a facebook Alternate?”, Ha. I know it sounds funny but there are many who want to have a facebook alternate and yes its true.

What a question, “Who wants a facebook Alternate?”, Ha. I know it sounds funny but there are many who want to have a facebook alternate and yes its true. I have been using facebook since 2006 when i got an invite from a friend of mine who lives in Germany, she shared some of her pics which she uploaded on facebook and my first thought about facebook then was “DULL and BORING” ya, I was on myspace which was much vibrant and lively but then facebook took over with the rice of PR and awesome controversies which got highlighted in all the big media news papers, then all the bloggers started talking about it and rest is the History.

I am an avid user of facebook and use it only for one sake not because it is something which is really great but because it is some place where all my friends are, yes all those friends who were once on myspace or orkut in the past. What does this mean that users have tendencies to switch to whatever they get or whatever that is hip. I believe both are applicable. Out of Total Internet population Globally how many understand technology, i believe only 1% or even that would be a higher figure which i am just estimating but yes i am sure the numbers must be very low. Rest are the ones are those who just love to follow what others are doing (I Know so many people who are on twitter but I never saw them using it) . People often tend to say that “I Hate This” or “I Hate That”, its a very strong notion though people really dont do much about it, but i realized this and thought of doing it. The best way to retaliate is to do something and then the thought of creating a social web popped up in my mind. a though which was so provoking that i took away my sleep and hit my bank balance badly, but i never cared as i am really a man who loves to attempt once decided hence i came ahead with this.

Watch this site explode as Mark Zuckerberg, Chris Hughes, and Dustin Moskovitz continue to “have fun.” Is this the beginning of Monopoly in the World wide web.

Mark Zuckerberg, Chris Hughes, and Dustin Moskovitz, founders of the Facebook.com phenomenon, saw an existing product in need of improvement and expansion.

A facebook is a book that is made up of photographs of individuals along with their names. Facebooks are often published at the start of the academic year by the administrations of colleges and universities, with the intention of helping students, faculty, and staff to get to know each other better. A facebook may be contrasted with a yearbook, which is traditionally published at the end of the academic year and usually includes details about various aspects of the preceding year, along with the sort of content one would find in a facebook.

Facebook.com is on online database of everything the old paper facebooks had and more.

Facebook Business Model

Business model is the mechanism by which a business intends to generate revenue and profits. It is a summary of how a company plans to serve its customers. It involves both strategy and implementation. It is the totality of:

• How it will select its customers

• How it defines and differentiates its product offerings

• How it creates utility for its customers

• How it acquires and keeps customers

• How it goes to the market (promotion strategy and distribution strategy)

• How it defines the tasks to be performed

• How it configures its resources

• How it captures profit

There are many different types of business models as some are more complex than others depending on the service. A few examples of types of business models are as follows:

• The subscription business model

• The razor and blades business model

• The pyramid scheme business model

• The multi-level marketing business model

• The network effects business model

Facebook fits into the network effects business model, which was pretty common in the dot-com boom of the late 1990s. This type of business model is based on the network effect which causes a good or service to have a value to a potential customer dependent on the number of customers already owning that good or service. Facebook fits this model because the more registered users there are on the site, the more useful the site is. With todays total population of more than 500 million facebook is certainly the best internet business so far.

How it selects its customers:

Facebook’s selection of customers is a very important part of the company’s business model. Social networking sites have been on the rise in the last decade and many are in existence today including MySpace, Friendster, and LiveJournal. Most of these social networking sites were not very specific and had a variety of users. This fact is what made Facebook’s selection of customers so important. Zuckerberg developed a personal niche for his site in making it specifically for high school, college and university communites, primarily in the United States. As this was the initial phenomenon which made it an instant success. With in a year span there were almost 80% of the students in United states were on facebook.

How it defines and differentiates its product offerings

The second aspect of a business model is how the company defines and differentiates its product offerings. One of the key elements to Facebook’s success is differentiation, particularly from the social networking giant, MySpace. What makes a student with an existing MySpace account want to register with Facebook? The answer to this question lies in how Facebook sets itself apart from other social networking sites. Facebook was the only brand of these sites that was for students and students only. Also, to narrow down the potential networks even more, members are mostly restricted to viewing detailed information about students only at their school. As a result of this, more intimate communities were created based on the schools. For example, when a UCSD student types www.facebook.com into their browser and logs onto the site, the real url that they are accessing is in fact http://ucsd.facebook.com/home.php. Facebook’s features are very similar to the features of MySpace. The major features include: profile, friends, groups, messages, wall, and photos. The profile is what makes up the users’ personal sites. Here they post information about themselves as well as a photo. The friends feature is one of the major ways that students are able to become connected through the site. Users can search the site and send friend requests to other users to acknowledge online friendships. The other way that the site connects students is through the groups feature. Students with particular interests, views, or hobbies are able to form and join online groups. The messages and wall features allow users to interact directly within the online community. Messaging is a private way of contacting members, almost like e-mail. Also, as an alternative to messaging, there is a “poking” feature, which is basically a way of saying “What’s up.” The wall acts as a sort of message board and offers more public communication between users. The recently added photos feature is part of the users

profile in which they can post photos of themselves and others for people within their college to see.

How it creates utility for its customers:

Michael Huston from the Arizona Daily Wildcat writes, “If you’re not on Facebook.com by now, then you’re either protesting it deliberately in an attempt to avoid doing what everybody else is doing, or you’re afraid that stalkers will use it to come after you.” At first it was simply a site to connect college students but now it is becoming a staple in the college social scene. The utility that Facebook creates for its customers is essential in creating traffic. Online social networking companies like Friendster have failed in the past for being too one-dimensional and unreal. Facebook was able to recognize these mistakes and capitalized greatly in forming a very real online social network. In theory, the services provided by these two companies are very similar. The difference is what makes the individual keep coming back to the site. On Friendster you can browse through various people’s profiles and add them as friends but the likelihood of you actually meeting these online friends is very small. Facebook, on the other hand, is the opposite. With the number of participating schools and users climbing, it is not rare to see someone online prior to meeting them in person. Facebook is useful in a variety of ways including:

• Forming study groups

• Finding roommates

• Keeping in touch with friends at distant schools

• Finding others with like interests

• Keeping up with social events

• Getting information on fraternities/sororities

How it acquires and retains customers:

Facebook was able to easily acquire and retain customers due to its increasing popularity. The statistics are almost unbelievable:

• 500M+ registered users

• coverage of 85% of US colleges.

• 80% penetration among students of colleges that are on the platform

• 2nd most visited Internet site.

• repeat usage: daily 70%, weekly 85%, monthly 93%

Creating a Facebook profile was slowly integrated into the freshman college registration process along with items like sending an official transcript, signing a housing contract, registering for classes, etc. Let’s face it, going into college is a scary time socially, but Facebook makes the transition a lot easier. Incoming freshmen can “add” their roommates and even get to know them months before move-in weekend. Some freshmen are even able to build extensive friend lists (networks) before college begins. Through groups and classes one can be connected to thousands of students. Networking is very important in college and Facebook helps students to establish these with little effort on their part. Facebook acquires customers as students realize their personal need for online networking, a need that is becoming more and more necessary everyday. When students meet they often tell each other to facebook them as a means of furthering a friendship. Someone without an account misses out on this completely.

Keeping the customers is a very easy task once they are on Facebook. Users continue to visit the site to partake in one of the newest activities, “facebooking.” Facebooking defined is the act of simply browsing though facebook.com with no specific purpose. More specifically, the verb “facebook” (as in “to facebook”) is used across campuses for the looking up of a certain individual and a) adding him/her as a friend, b) sending him/her a message, c) ‘poking’ him/her, or d) writing on his/her ‘wall.’ These features bring about major opportunities for the communication that college students are looking for

Most new users go through a period of Facebook addiction sometime in their college career. The degree of which Facebook is used as a means of communication requires that it be checked on a daily basis. Throughout the course of the day one can get messaged, poked, or have their wall written on. Also, with the new photos feature, one can get tagged in a picture by one of their friends. There are so many places where something new to one’s profile can occur, and this makes it very addicting. Has so and so sent me a message back yet? Or did so and so put those pictures up yet?

How it goes to the market (promotion strategy and distribution strategy)

Distribution Strategy

Zuckerberg’s distribution strategy is the key element behind his idea, the internet. Facebook provides a service that connects college students through a few clicks of the mouse. This strategy is not new as it’s used by many social networking sites. In today’s busy world, people don’t have the time and effort to put into physical networking with others. Companies such as MySpace and Friendster use this same idea which has been proven to be successful.

Promotion Strategy

Promotion hasn’t been a major issue due to Facebook’s instant success. Facebook has not funded any major advertising campaigns in order to increase awareness because the awareness was there from the start. Zuckerberg started Facebook as an online directory of Harvard students and it was an instant hit. Within a month Facebook was available at Columbia, Stanford, and Yale and by the summer it was available at about thirty different universities. The promotion of the site has been mostly by word of mouth, as current users rave to their friends about the site and its many features. Publicity in the media has also helped the company’s promotion along. There have been a number of newspaper articles as well as television interviews documenting the recent success story.

How it defines the tasks to be performed:

The tasks to be performed were very simple from the beginning in creating Facebook. Zuckerberg had a clear idea in his head of the service he wanted to provide the user with. Essentially, it would be an online directory comprised of college students for their use and benefit. Having been programming since the age of ten, Zuckerberg was able to easily accomplish this task and took a few weeks to set up a website that allowed users to interact. Through classes, groups, interests, and friends the site notifies the user how he/she is connected. This feeling of connection is very important because that’s what the general population of users are seeking. Another major task that Zuckerberg was faced with was setting his social network site apart from the others. In order to demand traffic a site must be unique in one way or another. This task was performed by making the site exclusive to ones college, forming a more intimate community. Also, Zuckerberg added a variety of features that the user could utilize while on the site such as messaging and poking.

How it configures its resources:

The major resources of Facebook are the servers that keep the site running despite the heavy amounts of traffic. These servers are very essential because the services and operations of Facebook depend solely on the website. A down server could result in the loss of millions of page hits. With little funding at the beginning, Zuckerberg was forced to keep Facebook relatively small because only so many servers could be purchased and set up. However, the growing audience could not be contained and in the fall of 2004, former Paypal CEO, Peter Thiel, invested $500,000 to buy servers to help support the rapid growth. (Theil noted that this particular investments was one of the best venture investments he’d ever made.)

Facebook is able to create a more secure and efficient network by co-locating its servers, which is very important in the operations of the business.

How it captures profit :

The big question behind Facebook and many other free online networking sites is: how do they actually make money? The answer is mainly advertising. Advertisements on Facebook are very valuable considering the amount of traffic the site is able to generate. Today as facebook has evolved into some serious revenue making models where they started charging developers 30% direct cut in revenue that they make by selling virtual goods using facebook platform. Likes of Zynga and Rockyou which have pioneered the Social Gaming Industry are all set to pay 30% to facebook from there revenue sheets and this means big money. Then as they increased the popularity of fan pages now they are starting to monetize them as well. The fan page which use to give liberty to Admin to decide on the landing tabs and also create custom landing tabs using FBML is no more possible until you pay for advertising. Today facebook current evaluation of $50 Billion is certainly because of these changes that facebook did to there revenue model. evolving from mere advertising to more substantial forced advertising.

Conclusion

Facebook has a very specific business model that will bring the company continued success in the future. The site is growing every day in many categories and is drawing more and more attention. Major corporations are seeking out the Harvard dropouts for a possible deal, but these guys are just having fun for now. Their main concern is providing a useful service. Watch this site explode as Mark Zuckerberg, Chris Hughes, and Dustin Moskovitz continue to “have fun.” Is this the beginning of Monopoly in the World wide web.

We all know about the mighty facebook, and the rise of “Alexander the Great” , or rather i should replace Facebook with “Mark Zuck”. Alexander the great was an awesome warrior who was on a spree to win the entire world and be the greatest emperor of all times, but in vain it did not happen, so shall we say that similar fate would be awarded to Mark Zuck also.

THE FACEBOOK STORY Today Mark Zuckerberg (facebook) has changed the fate of Internet and so called social media, Today every blogger is writing about it and the hype has gone beyond reaches of any one. Facebook which was started in a small Dorm room of Harvard has taken over the web if not completely then a major part of it. Facebook was not the original concept it was first stolen from Winklevoss twins who were mark’s seniors and also the founders of “Harward Connection”, they got there compensation for the same , which was a whooping amount of $65 millions, awesome money which they might have not dreamt of earning with true potential of “Connect U” but then who cares, we have facebook and they have a claim over it.

This is really ironical that Mark Zuck is a celebrity today but is a cheater at the same time and this is public , Globally all the big media players covered the Trial and settelment between Zuck and Winkelvoss and then came The Social Network movie which did the final damage, today even public knows about this. Its was hard for me to figure out at the end of the movie to determine that who was the good guy or who was the bad guy in the movie, The sympathy was with “Eduardo Saverin” who was a great friend and also the founder member of facebook along with Zuckerberg but was Ducked by him, he was a classic example of back stabbing and the second from Mark Zuck in the tale so far.

Facebook was not a genuine idea anyways as the friendster and Myspace was already there and teens were flocking them so this means the ideation was original but the idea was not. In a same fashion that Colt was the one one who invented Gun but then came engineers who excelled the idea and game us AK-47 , Eduardo Saverin was a great guy according to me and according the script displayed in The Social Network”, he was a true friend, as when the idea of facebook popped up in Mark Zuck’s mind he was the first one whom he discussed the idea with and being a true friend Saverin agreed to the greatness of the idea, well at the age of 19 it was a tough decision to fund any friend’s idea with ones father’s money but Saverin did the same , He was the first ever investor and partner with 30% stake in Facebook however there was no writer clause for the same , but according to me only a true friend can agree to pay you such amount ($18000) without having a plan for revenues, it went ahead for few months and facebook started growing within the campus and then Mark met Sean Parker (Napster.com Fame) and the story changed completely.

Its great to be ambitious and we all are equally ambitions but is it fair to stab someone who is your best friend and someone who gave you wings to fly, imagine if Saverin would have said no to Zuck when he narrated the whole idea he would have never gone ahead with it as Mark was not financially stable to bear the costs on his own and getting the finances only on an idea was truly a herculean task those days, or another fate would have been That Zuck would have gone ahead with Winkelvoss brothers to create Connect U and probably today identified as one of the partners in it. Ha!!! It all sounds weird but this is true, Now imagine if Mark Zuck, Eduardo Saverin and Winkelvoss all were from Dubai (UAE) then the situation would have been like this, keeping the law system of Dubai in mind “an eye for an eye” then after losing the law suit to Winkelvoss, Mark would have been asked to create an equal big idea and give it back to Winkelvoss , isn’t it funny but that should have been the real justice. What is bigger the idea part or the execution part now opens a new debate in my mind, and believe me it’s quite difficult to answer this question.

What do you think about this ?

Now lets Peep what a bit into the major characters of “The Facebook Story” :

Mark Zuckerberg Mark Zuckerberg ( CEO Facebook.com )

He started facebook on feb 4th, 2004 with his two room mates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.

Eduardo Saverin was his fast friend and also CFO of Thefacebook.com and had 30% stake in the company.

Facebook Got its first funding from paypal founder Peter Thiel.

Mark Zuckerberg is the most eligible bachelor on the planet earth today.

Today Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest Richest In the World with highest net worth of more than $2 Billion.

Eduardo Saverin Saverin Eduardo ( CFO thefacebook.com )

An American of Brazilian descent who is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Facebook.

Saverin met Mark Zuckerberg during his freshman year and later co-founded Facebook during his sophomore year.

Saverin drifted away from what was then known as “thefacebook” due to conflict in ideologies with Zuck.

Saverin sued Zuckerberg and Facebook in April 2005. Saverin won his claim in court to label himself as a co-founder of Facebook along with 5% stake.

He owns a 5% share of Facebook, worth $2.5 billion USD as of January 4, 2011.

Sean Parker Sean Parker ( Founder Napster.com)

Sean Parker (born December 3, 1979) is an American internet technology businessman.

He was a pro software programmer, At 16, he was sentenced to community service for hacking.

Parker graduated from Oakton High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. He co-founded Napster, a free file-sharing service for music.

Lawsuits by various industry associations eventually shut down the Napster.

He became Facebook’s first president receiving 7% of Facebook’s stock.

In 2006, Parker joined the Founders Fund, a venture capital fund based in San Francisco, as Managing Partner.

Winklevoss Twins Winklevoss Twins ( Founders ConnectU )

The original idea of College Network was from Winkelvoss twins along with Divya Narendra.

They named it as “Harvard Connection” which later got a new name as “Connect U”

Winklevoss twins were Olympic Fame Rowers.

They approached Mark Zuck to code the entire thing for them.

The sued Zuck for stealing the idea and setteled the case out of court in 2008 for $65 Million.

They have again Sued Mark Zuck for the same case however the allegation is The stock Valuation.

So now we have read so much about This Mark Zuck that i am really in dilemma that whose side shall I speak for. What Mark Zuck has done very few has ever achieved , 100s of organisation spent decades to reach a $$$ billion turnover but facebook did this in mere 5 years. People call that the evil will always get punished at the end so lets see what happens to Mark Zuck, if he is an evil guy who cheated on so many then whats his fate in near future. !! Would love to read your comments !!

Recent IFPI report on digital music reveals the size of Spotify in Europe and how much money it’s actually churning for the record labels. The report also stated that on a European level, Spotify is the second single largest source of revenue for record labels. This means that 2010 saw dramatic increase in its usage as well as payouts to record labels and artists themselves.

The report states that digital music revenues grew by 20 percent in Europe in 2010. Record labels still rely heavily on sale of physical music, CDs etc. and in total digital music only accounted for about 20% of music sales in 2010.

Overall, the service is the largest music retailer in Norway and Sweden and also in terms of usage, number two behind iTunes. One of the reasons behind this growth and success has been Spotify’s strategic deals with ISPs, mainly Telia. The IFPI report forecasts music services to generate more than £100 million in revenues for ISPs by 2013.

Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify states “ISPs need to start looking at these strategic partnerships as a marketing tool and integrate them into their core operations.” ISPs are naturally of great interest for music companies as they have a billing relationship to a large existing user base.

However, the real reason hype Spotify here is that the world music market was about $4.6B in 2010. Only 29% of this was digital, on a global level. If we look at national markets, Finland for example, we can see Spotify’s real effect for record labels and the market place.

According to IFPI Finland, total digital sales increased a very nice 87,5% in 2010 compared to 2009. But the real winner inside this category was bundled subscriptions, which saw a jaw dropping increase of over 1400% to 2.8M euros in sales, just in Finland. Bundled subscriptions is of course mostly services such as Spotify.

Another interesting category, relating to Spotify in Finland was the ad-supported income, which increased from about 785 000 euros in 2009 to about 2.2M euros in 2010. Overall, the digital music market in Finland was valued at approximately 7.8M euros last year. Therefore we can easily conclude that Spotify has really taken the market by storm and started to pay some serious return for the record labels.

Spotify’s growth in Sweden was strong, but a lot more modest compared to Finland. According to a press release by IFPI Sweden, digital streaming services grew 162% year-on-year to about 170 million Kronor (about 19.3M euro).

In conclusion, Spotify’s 2010 looks amazing. No wonder Daniel Ek is able to speak about Spotify’s development in a confident way: “We signed up more than 750,000 subscribers in the first year of our subscription offering. I believe we’re on track to be the biggest music subscription service in the world very shortly.”
Storenvy is doing for e-commerce what Tumblr has done for blogging — making it more accessible and more social. And you got the part that it’s totally free, right?

SELLERS: YOUR OWN STORE PLUS A MARKETPLACE

Storenvy enables anyone, from the owner of a fashion boutique to a guy designing skateboard decks, to create their own customizable store at no charge and with no programming knowledge required. (Though if you know CSS, you can dive in and edit to your heart’s desire!) By combining all Storenvy stores’ products into one big marketplace, stores make more sales through the natural discovery process. Currently, Storenvy stores are making almost 15% of their sales through the marketplace rather than through direct store traffic.
SHOPPERS: DISCOVER NEW THINGS & MAKE NEW FRIENDS

Storenvy is like a mall… but cool. Our well-categorized marketplace makes it easy for shoppers to browse all stores at once, letting them save their favorite items for later and follow updates from their favorite stores and users. And of course, buying on Storenvy means supporting an independent merchant somewhere in the world, which is always awesome!

Who was it created by?

List Gorilla was created by Jason Strachan & Ash Herring with whatever spare time we had. We stared this project over lunch and a few beers in December 2009 and since then we have been designing, building and adding features to resemble what you see today.

Jason works as a freelance designer. He likes to go skateboarding and shoot the occasionally photograph. You can find out more about him here.

Ash has been creating crazy software, websites and ventures for the best part of the last 15 years – for love and occasionally for money. He used to like things like skiing and photography but his leisure time is now fully utilised as a permanent climbing-castle by his two young boys. You can find out more about him here.

Jason and Ash are based in from Melbourne, Australia.
To leverage technology and the appetites of those around us with whom we want to interact. To add an element of accountability needed in today’s online world, by building a stronger, safer and more authentic community by linking legitimate people to legitimate and unique public identifiers.
