Facebook Hacked

Just one day after Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page was hacked,Facebook responded with a whole menu of new security features.  More than just a publicity stunt, the quick response included some key changes that all Facebook users should know.

Read on for all you need to know about these five, key new tools.

  1. HTTPS-enabled browsing protects users against password stealing on public networks and hacking schemes like the Firefox add-on Firesheep by creating a secure connection, even if the network is insecure.  Good news for sure, but Facebook has still left it up to the individual user to enable the HTTPS browsing themselves.  First, go to “Account Settings” under “Account” on the upper right of your screen, then down to “Account Security” and click “Change,” which will allow you to enable HTTPS browsing. You can also choose to receive an email when a new computer or device logs into your account.  One fair warning, however, is that HTTPS can sometimes dramatically decrease your page loading time, meaning what you gain in security, you may lose in speed.

Reasons Why? FourSquare Posted 3,400% Growth Last Year

Posted on 28 January 2011 by Adviction

Okay, double-digit growth is usually something to celebrate … but quadruple-digit growth? That’s pretty impressive. So, it’s hardly surprising that FourSquare is thumping its chest a bit on its corporate blog. After all, the young company’s 3,400 percent growth in 2010 justifies a bit of bravado.

So, how did FourSquare pull this off? Let’s take a look at five factors that drove the company’s meteoric ascent:

1. More check-ins than Americans: of course, FourSquare is a global social media application (I picked up a few mayorships when I was in London last week, for example); there have even been check-ins from North Korea! Nonetheless, 381,576,305 check-ins in 2010 is pretty impressive. There was even one from outer space!

Fitness Social Network “FITANGO” VP Business Development Speaks

Fitness Social Network “FITANGO” VP Business Development Speaks

Posted on 25 January 2011 by Adviction

One of the newest social networks on the block, Fitango wants to help you achieve your fitness and life goals. Working with experts, you can set action plans, mini-goals, and get motivated to reach your potential. We had the chance to sit down with Parinda Muley, VP of Business Development at Fitango, to discuss Fitango’s growth, its social elements, and why creating Action Plans helps people achieve their goals.

Can you give me a brief background of Fitango?

fitango.com

fitango.com

Fitango was founded by Dr. Dov Biran in 2009. In his everyday life, Dov is passionate about technology, fitness, music and the arts, as well as nutrition. Being an early tech adopter, Dov struggled with finding a way to manage his goals online and, more importantly, finding trusted and accredited coaches and instructors (known as “experts” in Fitango) to provide him with the proper guidance he needed.

As Dov struggled with managing his own personal goals, he realized many of his friends and family were struggling with the same issues. On the flip side, Dov started researching the self-improvement market and realized that many experts (whether individuals or businesses) don’t currently achieve positive ROI by selling their knowledge online and, therefore, do not invest in online platforms. The solution was simple – create one marketplace that gives experts and users the tools they need to achieve financial and personal success.

The company started operating in mid 2009 and launched its beta in Dec 2010. Since we launched we experienced steady growth and have now several thousand registered users. We are located in NYC, and have 10 full-time employees.

Can you describe the social elements that people will experience on Fitango?

The social element is an inherent part of Fitango’s core offering. We have done a lot of research on what drives people to actually achieve their goals – one factor, specifically, was having community support. As a result, we embedded many social features into the system to ensure successful completion of Actionplans, and ultimately, goals.

First, each registered user can assign a “Motivator” for their Actionplan. Typically, a Motivator is a close friend, family member, or an expert that has full visibility into your daily accomplishments. The Motivator can send you comments or feedback on your Actionplan Board and can also give you a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” to either encourage you (or peer pressure you) to get things done!

Second, every registered user that downloads a certain Actionplan can opt to be part of what we call the “Bubble” – now each person that is working on the same Actionplan can share their thoughts and questions on the Bubble discussion forum – this is often the community support that individuals need to help them stay on track.

Third, each registered user has the opportunity to “Brag” and share their success stories or recent achievements with their Facebook friends. For example, if I achieve my first milestone of losing 2 pounds in the Shred Your Core in 4-Minutes a Day Actionplan, then I can share “Parinda just lost 2 pounds with Rachel’s Shred Your Core in 4-Minutes a Day Actionplan.” This element is beneficial in two ways: (i) bragging about accomplishments is viewed as reward and keeps people on track and (ii) our experts continue to increase their brand value by being able to leverage the already strong network that Facebook offers.

Fourth, you can ‘share’ and ‘gift’ Actionplans to others that are not Fitango users

What types of experts do you tap for your Action Plans? How does your Planstore work?

Fitango currently utilizes a two-pronged approach to acquiring partners. The first approach is fairly ‘grassroots’ which involves seeking individual experts in the fitness, nutrition, health, parenting, and education space. While our long-term goal is to provide expert Actionplans in all lifestyle categories, we wanted to start in select areas to provide diversity and depth of content. In acquiring these experts, we initially started with our warm contacts and have since reached out to large niche networks to acquire experts. Each expert is thoroughly vetted by our Content Team before being approved to serve as an expert on our site.

Our second approach is seeking corporate partnerships that can provide both content and traffic. We are focusing on opportunities within the same lifestyle space as individual expert. We are in the process of beginning three pilots with companies in the education and parenting arena.

What are some of the most popular Action Plans that people want to achieve through Fitango?

The most common Actionplans that people seem to favor are fitness, nutrition, and careers. Specifically, Six Months to Healthy Weight Loss, Shred Your Core in 4-Minutes a Day, 13.1 Weeks to 13.1 Miles, 17 Days to Full Detox, and 10 Steps to Accomplishing More At Work have been among the favorites. In terms of demographics, it’s a bit early to analyze the data, however, we can share much to our surprise that the majority of users are men.

Is there anything else you would like to share about Fitango?

Since our official launch, we have been growing at an exponential rate, which neither we nor our servers expected! We are excited about the progress we have made thus far and have several new releases planned in the upcoming weeks. Our company’s goals are two-fold: first, to be a strong revenue-generating operation and second, to give people the tools and resources they need to connect to healthier and happier lives. We have a very energetic and passionate team in New York that has put their heart and soul into this company. Expect to see big things from us in the months ahead to make Fitango the next revolutionizing company.

Facebook is the Most Blocked Site : Report

Posted on 25 January 2011 by Adviction

OpenDNS, the world’s largest provider of Internet navigation and security services, has just released some interesting statistics about the websites that are commonly blocked, and the websites that network administrators give access to their users in 2010. The report also ventures into detailing the sites that endured the most online scams in 2010.

“Overall, 2010 was all about social, and this trend is reflected in the data we’re seeing at OpenDNS. Facebook is both one of the most blocked and the most allowed websites, reflecting the push/pull of allowing social sites in schools and the workplace,” said OpenDNS Founder and CEO David Ulevitch. “This trend was also apparent in the phishing data we analyzed, where Facebook and other websites focusing on social gaming were frequently the targets of online scammers.”

Facebook was the top most blocked website in 2010, and the second most frequently whitelisted website, with more than 14 percent of all admins who block websites on their networks choose to block Facebook. The top three most frequently blocked websites included Facebook, MySpace and YouTube, with pornography being the top most blocked category.

Paypal topped the list of site, that endured the most phishing attacks, with 45 percent of all phishing attempts made in 2010 were targeting PayPal. Paypal receives such astounding number of phishing attacks that Facebook, which came at no. 2 on the list, receives 9 times less attacks as were targeted towards Paypal. But with Paypal being the world’s top financial service, this is hardly a surprise to anyone.

Social networks and Social games are the most phished brands on internet, with five out of top ten phished sites, belonging to this category. These five sites include, Facebook, World of Warcraft, Sulake Corporation (makers of Habbo), Steam and Tibia (online games).

Spotify and Twitter : What A Match

Spotify and Twitter : What A Match

Posted on 24 January 2011 by Adviction

Music has always been a social concept — even if you’re swaying to the beats in solitary ecstasy with your headphones on, chances are you’ll probably tell a friend about this great song at some point. For this reason, music web sites and programs like Spotify have taken the social media plunge. Spotify seems to advertise Facebook as its biggest social media outlet, but Twitter may actually have more potential for this popular listening service.

Spotify already has a bunch of advantages going for it. It’s a free listening service (with the standard model option of paying for more perks) that you can download to your computer, and it lets you search any song or album and play it instantly. You can also create playlists, browse the top charts, and read the Spotify Facebook feed for music news and tips from both your friends and Spotify itself.

However, whereas Spotify prominently says “Share music” on the sidebar of the application, there is no counterpart playing up its Twitter feed. The @Spotify Twitter account is active and thriving, however. The account has a healthy 76,000+ followers and tweets several times a day.

But though the site’s Twitter account has a lot of potential, it isn’t a music match made in heaven yet. Most of the tweets have to do with answering people’s questions or talking about release dates for new albums. The interaction between listeners and the company is good, but Spotify users would definitely benefit from a few more music-based tweets. Since the “search” element is maybe Spotify’s most alluring feature — you can type any song in and will probably be able to listen to it! — it would be great to have a Spotify tweet stream that gave you ideas for songs to listen to.

Of course, users have such diverse music tastes that releasing random song, album, and artist titles might seem like blindly playing darts. But perhaps that’s the hidden beauty of Twitter — you get bombarded by random tweets, and you might be compelled to look up a random song that doesn’t fit your usual genre.

Pandora has already leveraged its social potential to become one of the top 10 downloaded apps on iTunes. Perhaps by bolstering its Twitter stream, Spotify can keep climbing the prestigious ladder of magical listening services.

Obama Previews His State Of The Union Address On YouTube

Posted on 24 January 2011 by Adviction

It used to be that if you didn’t watch the news or subscribe to the local newspaper you would miss out.  Now it looks like you’ll be missing out if you aren’t a YouTube user.  That’s right!  President Obama is giving YouTubers a sneak peak at Tuesday’s State of the Union address that you won’t find in the newspapers or on your local news.

Obama says that he’s still working on Tuesday’s speech but, “because you guys [YouTubers, social media users, etc.] have been there from the start, because it was your passion and vision that helped get me to the White House, I just wanted to give you a little bit of a preview of what I’m going to be saying.”  As you surely remember, Obama was a true pioneer of using social media in politics.  He used Facebook, YouTube and Twitter as major platforms for spreading the word about his campaign back in 2008 and it is only fitting that he has continued to use YouTube throughout his office.

In his State of the Union Preview, the President talks about the jobs that have been created over the past year, and the fact that the stock market is back up and corporate profits are healthy again.  However, he admits that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done and lets viewers know about his principal focus on creating jobs and ensuring that the economy is working for everyone and that the American Dream is attainable to everyone who is willing to work for it.

        Obama – State of Union

Of course, you’ll have to tune in on Tuesday night for Obama’s full State of the Union address.  You’ll be able to watch on television, but the speech will also be streaming live on YouTube.  You can also submit questions via YouTube for an interview with the President that will also stream live on YouTube a couple of days after his State of the Union, on Thursday January 27 at 2:30 PM ET.

What do you think of the ways in which Obama is using YouTube to connect and communicate with his constituents?  Will you be watching his address and subsequent interview on YouTube?

New Adam Sandler Movie Goes With Facebook Theme

Posted on 24 January 2011 by Adviction

While The Social Network may have been a fictionalized history of Facebook, other movies are trying to capitalize on the social network’s popularity including an upcoming Adam Sandler movie.

As Ryan Spoon pointed out to us yesterday afternoon, Just Go With It, integrates Facebook into the  entire movie trailer, including a mention of the movie’s Facebook Page. While I’m sure a hot girl plus Adam Sandler, plus some social network references can sell tickets for a movie, I’m not sure how big of a role, if any, Facebook plays within the film itself. It’s definitely an interesting use of Facebook. Check out the complete trailer below

            IS It Private ?

The conversation at the Digital Privacy Forum provided a deep and broad context for the daily privacy decisions made by everyone engaged in social media. Whether you feel your personal information is a data property with value you can barter or privacy is a core human right, you can no longer ignore the potential impact — good and bad — of the widespread dissemination of your life’s details.

Here are some resources you can use to learn more and become active in the privacy conversation.

Organizations are cited in the order presented at the Digital Privacy Forum.

            Personal Democracy Forum

Observing that technology is changing politics, the Personal Democracy Forum “is one hub for the conversation already underway between political practitioners and technologists, as well as anyone invigorated by the potential of all this to open up the process and engage more people in all the things that we can and must do together as citizens.” Founder Andrew Rasiej’s presentation opened the forum.
